How to Make the Most of Your Products

April 2024

Believe it or not, how you look after your candle or reed diffuser can really affect both how long it lasts and how well the scent throws. So I've put together some of my best tips and tricks to help you make the most of your products!

When it comes to candles, the most important thing to remember is that, how you burn it the very first time you light it, will determine how it will burn every other time after that. So it's really important to take the time and care on that very first burn and it will pay off for the rest of your candle's lifetime. Before you get that match or lighter anywhere near your brand new candle, make sure that you have trimmed your wick down to 1cm. This will keep your candle burning evenly, avoid smoking and make it last as long as possible. You can then go ahead and light your candle, watch to see the wax pool start to form around the wick, this wax pool is the secret to perfectly burning candles. On this first burn especially, you want to continue burning your candle until the wax pool reaches the very edge all the way round. Once it reaches the edge, you can continue to burn your candle, or you can put it out knowing that you've set your candle up for success. If you don't do this step then your candle will 'tunnel' which means you will end up with wax left around the sides, wasting a lot of your candle. If you're finding that your wax pool is struggling to reach one side of your jar (this can happen if it's particularly cold), you can pop a coaster under the side where the wax isn't melting, this will allow your flame to sit closer to the unmelted wax and should encourage the wax pool to spread to that last little bit. It's always good practice to burn your candle until the wax reaches the edges each time, but the first burn is the most important one. Keep trimming your wick down to 1cm before each use and you should have the perfect burn.

Reed diffusers are definitely a lot less fussy but there are a couple of things that you can do to ensure you're making the most of yours. Your reed diffuser will come with eight natural rattan reeds, now what a lot of people don't realise is that you don't have to use all of these! If you have a strong sense of smell and it's going in a little downstairs loo for example, putting all eight reeds in may create a very overpowering scent for you. So the easy fix for this is to add a couple of reeds at a time every few days until you reach the level that you would like. Remember this will vary from person to person as we all have very different strengths of smell and also the size of the room will make a big difference too, so play around to see what works best for you. It's also important to remember to flip your reeds every two weeks. To do this, pinch all of the reeds just above the diffuser bottle top, pull them out of the bottle and put the ends that were facing upwards down into the diffuser oil. Then make sure to give your hands a really good wash to remove any oil that may have transferred onto them. I would also recommend doing this with a piece of kitchen roll to hand just incase of any drips.
